Learn How Bees Build with Math
A short lesson with
Amazing Architecture, Honeycomb, Bees, and Philosophy
Meet the Honeycomb
Bees make wax, a soft material for building.
They build tiny rooms called cells.
Cells hold honey and baby bees. Many cells make a honeycomb.
Black = honey. White = empty.
Which Shape Fits?
Bees need rooms with no gaps.
Gaps waste space. Pick a shape and see.
Diagonal lines mark gaps.
These regular shapes have equal sides and equal angles.
Save the Wax
Regular triangles, squares, and hexagons fit with no gaps.
Which uses the least wax for the same room size?
Thomas Hales proved the honeycomb result in 1999.
The hexagon needs the least wax.
Perimeter means the distance around a room.
Build Together
Many bees can start in different places.
Each group builds cells. The groups grow until they meet.
Where groups meet, a few cells look a little different.
Scientists still study how bees and warm wax shape cells.
This picture is a simple model, not a real hive.
Big Questions
Bees have built-in ways to act, called instinct.
Scientists study how instinct works.
Some people see wisdom in nature’s patterns.
Science studies how. Philosophy and faith also ask why.
Which question asks WHY?
Words from the Quran
What Muslims Believe
Over 1,400 years ago, the Quran described creation in simple, powerful words. Here is one passage about bees.
Surah An-Nahl · 16:68–69
English Translation: Dr. Mustafa Khattab (The Clear Quran).
And your Lord inspired the bees: “Make ˹your˺ homes in the mountains, the trees, and in what people construct,
and feed from ˹the flower of˺ any fruit ˹you please˺ and follow the ways your Lord has made easy for you.” From their bellies comes forth liquid of varying colours, in which there is healing for people. Surely in this is a sign for those who reflect.
Read the full translation of verse 69Look closer: Inspired
The verse says God inspired the bee.
Muslims believe God gave bees knowledge to build and gather.
Look closer: Homes
The verse names mountains, trees, and what people build.
Bees nest in rock cracks, trees, and bee boxes.
Look closer: Female bees
Worker bees that make honey are female.
The Arabic words here use feminine forms.
Some Muslim readers link these facts.
Arabic grammar also treats the word for bees as feminine.
Think, Wonder, and Keep Asking
Look closely. Ask questions. Keep wondering.
